It seems that every time I look at a sales ad or watch a television commercial, I don’t see very many desktop computer. I see plenty of cell phones. There are plenty of tablets and eReaders, but no desktop computers. The only place I see any sales ads for desktop computers is through emails from places like Newegg or Tiger Direct.

If I go to a website like PCMag.com, I come across a healthy set of reviews for the Top 10 Desktop computers. PCWorld.com has its own list as to what they think the Top 10 Desktop computer are. TopTenReviews.com has another list for desktop computers. Even Cnet.com what they consider as the best desktop computers.

I see more and more people look at desktop’s as boring boxes. Then you see new features like a desktop computer with touch screen monitors. Of course there is the hard core gamer who have a computer box so powerful it send’s the electric meter spinning when it is turned on.
At Christmas time you can find a desktop top computers on sale in the $250 to $5,000 price range. Then you have add on a monitor. Monitor will usually add $100 or more if bought as one.
I want us to look at three different types of desktop computers. Each on is set to supply the needs of a different type of user.  Starting with the basic desktop without a monitor. The second on will be a mid range box and monitor. It is designed for watching videos and the casual gamer. The third box will be will be a powerful non-custom box that should be purchased by a power user.
eMachines EL1360-UR30P - TigerDirect.com sells this eMachine for $279.99. Here is the cheapest new desktop you can possibly find. Note it does not have a monitor. In the box you get a

  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 Terabyte hard drive
  • nVida GeForce GTX 560 Ti Dual SLI video Card.

The negative to this computer, besides the price is The front panel USB 3.0 port requires pass-through cable. Video cards may block some expansion slots.

Bottom-line: In this quick look as to what is available in the way of desktop computers, I did not look a refurbished, nor touch screen monitors. Refurbished computer and monitor can be purchased on Craig’s List for around $250. Touch screen monitors have been seen starting around $800.

I listed mostly online stores, because there is where the best deals can be found. As week go into the final week before Christmas many of the online retailers are offering free shipping. Some local big box stores are offering unpublished deals.
