Since we are surrounded by technology, I want to ask you, “How much technology do you need?” “What kind of technology do you need?”
It wasn’t to long ago when all this technology was not available to us. When we do not have our favorite technology we start to act like a drug addict who is deprived of her drugs.
Fifty years ago computers were the size of building. Microwave ovens were not in our homes. If we wanted some information we had to go to the library. There was no Google.
Forty years ago businesses just start explore the use of computers in their business. The idea of watching movies the television on demand through a VHS and Beta cartages were becoming popular.
Thirty years ago microwave ovens were just starting to become common place in our homes. Desktop computers were showing up in businesses as well in the homes of the rich. Cell phones were the size of a brief case. Computer gaming consoles were just starting to show up.
Twenty years ago most every kitchen had a microwave oven as a essential cooking tool. Windows operating system was just starting to becoming more and more widely used. Gaming consoles
Ten years ago desktop computer were just starting to becoming powerful. The internet was like the wild wild west. Computer virus and spyware were very common.
Today, we have cell phones that more powerful than computers of ten years ago. Clipboards are being replaced by touch screen computers that are thinner than a book. You can watch movies on each of these devices in excellent quality.
In today’s world the average home needs to have a desktop computer, laptop computer, computer like cell phone, along with those tablet computers.
All of these high tech devices come with a price. They are time consuming. They pull our attention from interaction family, and friends.
The cost of buying, and usage could be saved to pay off a home in 1/3 the time. Cable or satellite television cost the average family around $50 per month. High speed internet service bill averages $30. Cell phone usage cost a family of four around $120 to $200 per month. So not counting buying a new cell phone every two year, the average family pays around $200 per month for the use of the technology alone.
The cost of next to top of the line smartphone with a two year agreement averages $200 to $300. Computer get replaced on the average of 3 to 4 years at the cost of $800. There is another $1,000 every four years we have to spend on technology. Add to the $1,000, software, antivirus programs for the computer, and application for the cell phone, rent on movies from Red Box, Netflix, or Blockbuster you will of have spent $1,400 dollars more.
Bottom-line: In today’s world every household needs at least one computer with high speed internet access. I do realize that some people do they a laptop or smartphone to aid in they job. Any thing more is turning a functional tool into a toy.
Technology can be a harmful distraction. When the technology takes away from school work, house work, and interacting with other people on a face to face basis, it is time to put the technology down.
What is your opinion? When is technology too much for you? What part of technology do you really need?
