Have you ever notice how many electronic gadgets we have that require a battery or batteries of some sort?
Well, I have. From just where I sit I see four items that depend on the use of batteries for its’ primary power source or as a back up power source. If we did not have batteries, we could not enjoy being as mobile as we are. In fact we are slaves to these batteries!
Next to the question of what size and shape a particular device uses, there is what type of battery is the best value. We do not have control as to what size and shape of battery is in a particular device, but we have control as to what type of battery we use. The different type of batteries have quite a range in length of use and price.
First let us look at some of the more popular types of batteries.
Wikipedia has such a long list of batteries, it would make you dizzy just looking at them. But let us narrow down the list to a few of the more common AA battery.
Alkaline – are for those people who don’t use a lot of batteries and the devices that gobble up battery life. Their cost is low. I have seen a lot of people who was their money by throwing out these batteries when they stop performing.
Rechargeable Alkaline – does allow you to use the battery over more uses. However, the rechargeable alkaline do not hold up well over high demanding use.
Lithium – is the type of battery that will last for years. They also hold up under extreme temperatures. However, they are not rechargeable. They do last several times longer than alkalines.
Nickel Metal Hydride batteries - are environmentally friendly, and rechargeable. If you use your device a lot and over a days or weeks, then higher the NiMH high capacity battery is what you need.
Michael Bluejay has put together quite a chart about batteries and performance.AllAboutBatteries.com has a nice little chart that give a rough cost of the different battery types, and Watt hour. I have put that table below.
It is well worth the time reviewing both of these resources before going out buying your next AA battery.
