Update on Tablet PC’s

April 8, 2011
By

Tablets, tablets, tablets, more tablets they are taking over the computer world. The latest and the greatest has become the must have electronic gadget of 21st century. Is personal computing every going to be the same? I seriously doubt it.

Back in January as the big Consumer Electronic Show, tablet PC were the big thing with all their accessories.  Here we are not three months later a growing number of people have purchased a tablet to replace the laptop and even the netbook.

Yes, I agree the standard laptop can be big and bulky. The netbook was a good  idea, but the tiny keyboard made is hard for some people to use. Now the tablet is not a bulky as either the traditional laptop, but it does have a even smaller touch screen keyboard. A lot of people are putting up with the key pad for the sake of a smaller device that can be carried where ever they go.

As you know I constantly warn people about buying the latest and greatest. I feel my hard earned dollar should not be spent on something that is not proven in the marketplace for at least a year.

Personally, I am amazed how many people have thrown this caution to the win. Most of those people are enjoying using their new tablet computer. Then there are those who are finding, it is buggy and not working for them.

Here, today, I want to share with you some of the known problems that people are having with their new tablets.

iPad 2 - Back light bleed, bonding blotches, and dead pixels are just the screen issues with the highest price of all the tablets. Then we have heard complaints of muffled microphones and speaker issues from DigitalTrends.com.

Motorola Xoom – Motorola Xoom (most people pronounce “zoom”) recent entry into the flood of tablets we have seen this year. The Xoom and its add on keyboard has got the owners forum a buzz. Getting updates, WiFi, and the email client are part of the issues are finding with the Xoom.

HP TouchPad – From the HP website I was reading about the TouchPad freezing up.

BlackBerry PlayBook – A Google search reveal a battery and code issues.

Samsung Galaxy Tab – The Galaxy Tab uses the same operating system as all the Android cell phones. Computer World talks about how the Samsung has reported there is an issue with some of the android apps not running properly on the larger screen.

Bottom-line: The known issues seem rather small in comparison as to what I would of have expected for such a new product. I still think the price is high.

I personally am going to wait until next year before fully recommending upgrading to a tablet. I expect to see lower prices in tablet with larger memory and more reliability by this time next year.  I am sticking with my laptop for now.

Update: Just got an email from eWeek.com. They are tech/business class website. They just post about 10 disappointment for tablets. You should check it out. Click here.
