It was just last week was the first time I had visited OverStock.com in quite some time. The first thing I noticed was there was some changes made. I quickly made note to myself that I wanted to come back and spend some time. Did you know that OverStock.com was started in 1999 by a Dr. Patrick M. Byrne. He recognized the potential in liquidating excess inventory through this relativity new media called the Internet. He had the idea of offering a wide range of products at bargain prices of closeout merchandise. Shortly after their launch there was these neat clean television commercials about OverStock.com. After 10 years of success there are still going strong. The commercials still have the white, clean not nonsense approach to bring visitors to there website, as portrayed in their 10 year commercial. Enough about the history and commercials, let us look at what is inside OverStock.com. When my web browser first opened up OverStock.com I was met with a clean looking black lettering on a white background. I was not overwhelmed with merchandise, like some other online stores that I have visited. No frills just plan and simple. The top left and upper left column was the menu. Along the left side was the [...]

Once a week we like to go out to eat as a family. This last Friday we were sitting around trying to figure out where we were going to go. Then my wife pulled out an envelope with some coupons she had clipped out of the sales sheets that come in the mail. After some discussion we went to Arby’s. Each member of our family walked up to the order counter with our coupons in hand. Basic we all told the cashier we wanted what was on the coupon. The coupons that did not include drinks were order separate. The total bill before was $21.93. Subtraction of $9.96 for coupon saving. Then add another 73 in local and state sales tax. The whole bill came to $12.88. We normally spend about $10 per person when we go out to eat. We cut our night eating out by $7 per family member. It was no five star restaurant, but we had a good time together. This got me thinking, is there times where we save to much for the sake of saving money, or are we just saving to make ends meet? Then I dug up article I read some time back at the Consumerist.com titled [...]

How prepared are you? Do you have a home first aide kit? Do you have enough insurance for when you are involved a major accident? There is the little home disasters that can affect you day to day living. What about your cell phone dies? Your computer decides not to start. What would you do? When the car will not start in the middle of Wal Mart parking lot? Your son or daughter comes running into the house with a major cut on their hand. I did not want to start the week on such a negative note. But this is a subject we all need to stop every so often and discuss. If you have been reading The Shopping Nazi for some time you know that I preach about backing up the information on your computer. If you have a lot of pictures and contacts that are not on your computer the cell phone’s information should be backed up. Then there has been other times where I have wrote about home/car insurance. Disaster planning is not an easy subject it discuss, as a family, but it is needed. There is a great benefit to discussing. The big benefits are: [...]

It is a universal principle that if you are a good steward to what you have you will gain more. Those who are bad stewards will lose what they have. You see these people who never seem to have anything nice. They don’t take care of what they have, or they are replace what was stolen from them. I hang my head low in shame over the amount of stuff I have had stolen or lost over the years. I must admit it was through carelessness on my part. I either did not lock locks or I left valuables in open tempting people to come by and steal from me. I have since then learned my lesson. What I have in my home and around me is to valuable to keep replacing. We have put together a system to help us keep on top of keeping our processions secure. At least once a year we review every aspect of what and how things are protected. This is from my online security, to car insurance, to how we lock the house when we leave for a family outing. We spread it out over the whole year. Each three month we focus [...]

On the first day of February, I set down with James Stocker from Silver Key Insurance INC. to discuss some basic questions around insurance. I chose James because he handles insurance for auto, home, along with other types insurance. He is not tied into just one or two insurance companies. James has an offering from quite a selection. Thus giving us the most objective look at the important facts about getting auto insurance. Drivers, in Idaho are required to carry a minimum liability of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 per accident in property damage coverage. This does vary from state as well as the penalties for not having auto insurance. That is why you need to go to auto insurance requirement, state by state to find out what you need. In most cases James does not recommend you carry the minimum liability limits. If you seriously injure someone in an accident $25,000 doesn’t go very far for medical care. The difference between $25,000 and the actual cost of care will then come from your savings, retirement accounts and even your home. You could essentially lose everything you have. Even if you have an old clunker that is [...]

It is not the miles per gallon divided by the price of gasoline. There are other factors when it come to determining the cost of driving your family car per mile. The cost of gas divided by the miles per gallon that is gotten by the family car. The cost of car needs to be divided by miles expected to be driven over the ownership of the car. Divide the cost of the cost after interest of loan for the car by the number of months of ownership. Divided that number by the number of average miles driven in month. The monthly cost of insurance divided by the average number of miles driver per month. Now divide the maintenance cost of the family car by average number of miles driven per month. Divide the cost of car wash, parking, and any other costs by the average number of miles driven per month. Finally, add of all the totals from the above. Then you have the cost it takes to drive your family car per mile. Just so you will know it cost us 69 cents per miles to drive our family car down the road. Now it only costs me [...]
