Not to often to I see a new car on the street and then instantly want to learn more about it. In this case a little red Chevrolet Sonic passed in front of me at the intersection. I turned my head to watch it. I made a mental note to find out more about this little red car. . I did not recognized the body style. However, I did see the Chevy logo on the front grill. The name of the grill plate was “Chevrolet Sonic”. When I got home I started doing some research. 2012 is the first model year for the Sonic. It is a new model from Chevrolet. It comes in a hatchback or sedan trims. The Sonic replaces the Chevrolet Aveo. Under the hood it is similar to the Chevrolet Cruze. What make the Sonic different is the optional interior features like heated front seats, remote start and a sunroof. Standard on the Sonic is air conditioning, AM/FM radio and an auxiliary input jack. Under the hood is the Chevy 1.8-liter inline 4 cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower. It delivers that 138 horsepower to the ground via a 6 speed automatic transmission. This little turbocharged engine is advertised as getting 40 miles [...]

Some people buy a vehicle with the expectation of replacing it every five years. Some replace their four wheel transportation sooner than others. I try to make our faithful horseless carriage last as long as possible. Then before buying another vehicle, I take my time to do some research as to what will meet our needs. I also look at how long it will be before I have to replace the replacement. I set the goal of at lease five years or more before replacing. If I am buying used, which I usually do, I look at what kind of car the previous owner did. Another factor that should be considered when buying a car from the start is its record of reliability for that make a model. The major sign for a makes and models reliability is the resale value. Kelly Blue Book is pretty much the industry’s standard for determining the value of a new or used vehicle. This is in direct relation to the reliability, performance and quality. The Kelly Blue Books have been around for as long as I can remember. Even, today I use their phone app to determine if the asking price for a specific vehicle is far [...]

Years ago we would laugh and point a Honda and Suzuki motorcycles as they would go by. We called them Rice Rockets, because they came from Japan. Today, Honda and Suzuki are laughing at us. They make much more than motorcycles, and we as consumers are buying their products. Name a vehicle with two or four wheels, it very likely Suzuki makes one. Periodically, I have been driving by this Suzuki car dealership. Out front is the big letter S and the name Suzuki under it. When I look in their direction, I don’t see any motorcycles. All I see is cars. I look hard to a motorcycles in their showroom, but there isn’t any. I keep wanting to stop by and take a look at the Suzuki car, but I keep driving on pass it. I must admit I do get hung up looking at Ford’s, Chevy’s, and even a Toyota or two. In all fairness I have not paid any attention to Suzuki as a car manufacture. According to Wikipedia the company of Suzuki was started back in 1909. It was not until 1952 where Suzuki switched from producing manufacturing equipment to motorcycles. In 1955 Suzuki stated the first production of light weight front [...]

When I heard Volkswagen had built a car that was in the same class as the BMW 3-series convertible or the Lexus IS convertible, but cheaper, I wanted to take a closer look at it. The Volkswagen Eos has been around six years. I far as I tell it has been the worst selling model in the history of the German automaker. However, Volkswagen is not giving up on this luxury looking sports car. The 2011 Eos received a facelift in hopes to generate interest in the mid size semi luxury car market. Little things like resign of the bumper and changing headlights to LED accents does give it a more of an upscale look. In the rear, the taillights also have LED illumination the bumper has also gone through some reworked. The Volkswagen Eos comes in three trims. They are the Komfort, Lux and Executive. The only difference is the placement of features like rear parking distance control and power heated rear view mirrors. These features are shared by Lux and Executive. Under the hood all three trims have 2.0 liter, 16 valve, DOHC, in-line 4 cylinder turbocharged engine producing 200 horsepower. The 200 horses are delivered the the 18″ stock wheel via a 6 speed [...]

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is not a bicycle. You will have to put gasoline in the tank, but you won’t have to be in shape to peddle 10 miles back and forth to work. The Chevrolet Malibu was named after the city in California (Malibu, California). The early beginnings of the Malibu began with the Chevrolet Chevelle. It came to its own model in 1978 as a rear wheel drive intermediate mid size car. It was in 1997 that GM revived the Malibu name as a front wheel drive car. Today, 2011 Chevrolet Malibu remains a popular, as a well equipped midsize family sedan. It’s starting to lag behind stronger leaders. Reports have it there is going to be a vast changes in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is available in four trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ. All the trims are powered by a four cylinder 2.4 liter gas engine. It delivers a modest 169 horsepower to the wheels through a six speed automatic transmission. Other features like On Star, hands free Bluetooth calling, and turn by turn navigation make the Chevy Malibu a vehicle of the 21st century. Edmunds.com likes the strong V6, economical inline four cylinder engine, fine ride and handling [...]

Last September AutomobileMag.com stated, “It’s no secret that the Jeep Patriot … the bottom rung of the Jeep lineup”. The next paragraph started with the statement, “the 2011 Patriot receives some much-needed updates in the form of an exterior face-lift and some polishing to its underpinnings.” Today we are going to look where the Jeep Patriot stands today. The Jeep Patriot has only been around since 2007 manufactured Daimler. It originally showed up at the New York Auto show in 2006, where it was marketed as a small sports utility vehicle. The Patriot comes in two trims; the Sport and Latitude. Under the hood is your choice of two engines. The 2.0 liter with 158 horsepower comes standard on the two wheel-drive Sport. While the Latitude trim comes with the 2.4 liter engine produces 172 horsepower to the wheels. The Sport and Latitude trims have the option of 4 wheel drive or just front wheel drive. US News and Ranking Reviews put the Patriot 20 out of 23 Affordable Compact SUVs. Rankings and Reviews like the affordable price, excellent fuel economy for its class, and off road ability. However they considered the Jeep Patriot very “un” with under powered, unrefined cabin, uncomfortable rear seats. The 2011 Kia [...]

The 2011 Honda Pilot is one of those SUV crossover vehicles that you don’t see many commercials on television. At first looks it is just another crossover. It came to my attention as through one of the top 10 list for 2011. When I visited Wikipedia.com I was impressed by the list of reconizations of the Honda Pilot. Car and Driver magazine’s Best Large SUV for 2003 through 2008, Intellichoice “Best Value of the Year”, Edmunds.com “Most Wanted SUV”, AMI Auto World “World Family Vehicle of the Year”, and Kelley Blue Book “Top 50 Most Popular Cars” all make a very impressive list of recommendations. The 2011 Honda Pilot comes in four basic trims. The LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring all come with the option of 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. All of these trims only comes with automatic transmission. Everyone of the Pilot trims are powered with a 3.5 liter i-VTEC V-6 engine, which delivers a 250 horsepower. First generation of the Pilot was released back in 2002 for the 2003 model year. In 2008, Honda released a redesigned Pilot. The redesign include interior, along with various standard safety features. US News Rankings and Reviews liked the Pilot’s spacious third row that can fit adults, powerful V6 engine, and three [...]

The Ford Fiesta was first released in late 1975. It was in the early 1970s Ford’s competitors were launching cars like the Fiat 127 and the Renault 5. The 1973 energy crisis was also affecting demand on cars. Ford needed a small car to compete. After going through research and many mock-ups, a prototype and project known as “Bobcat”. This was the basis for Ford’s new car, the “Fiesta”. The sixth generation of the car has been introduced over the past 30 years. The Ford Fiesta has never been a top blockbuster seller, but it has done well over the years. The 2011 Ford Fiesta comes in five different trims. All 2011 Ford Fiestas are powered by a 1.6 liter inline four cylinder engine which delivers 120 horsepower to the road. A five speed manual transmission is standard, However, you can get a six speed automatic transmission if you want. 0-60-mph sprint of 9.5 seconds from the manual transmission makes the Fiesta a peppy little car. I went to US News and Ranking Reviews, where I was amazed how they started off praising the Fiesta, by writing, “The 2011 Ford Fiesta ranks 2 out of 33 Affordable Small Cars.” They went on to praise how reviewers almost [...]

This week we are going to look at the Honda Ridgeline. I know the word Honda does not really put in your mind a serious truck doing serious work. If you remember several weeks back when I list the top ten pickup trucks of 2011, the Honda Ridgeline was #6 on the list. This made me think that Honda is going to have more than a token offering as far a pickup trucks. This is the sixth year of production for the Honda Ridgeline. Honda market the Ridgeline as an alternative choice in the pickup truck world. My disappointment started when I read the Ridgeline offers only one engine choice. This is the 3.5 liter V6 engine producing a whopping 250 horsepower. Then it can only pull a 5,000 pound trailer. Now the payload is limited to 1,500 pounds, In a short 5 foot long bed. The truck is raised to the size of other trucks with its 17 inch steel wheels. The power sliding rear window, air-conditioning, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, under seat storage, full power accessories, cruise control, a trip computer and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo with an auxiliary audio jack make the Honda Ridgeline more of a basic passenger [...]
