I was asked by a client asked me about the Dodge Nitro. I looked at him and raised my shoulders, because I have seen it on the street and nothing more. My friend was asking me because his neighbor was selling his 2010 model. Nitro was first sold in the fall of 2006. Powered by a 3.7 liter Powertech V6 or a 4.0 liter SOHC V6 engine. This made the Nitro Dodge’s least powerful SUV’s on the market. Today, the Dodge comes into three basic trim levels. Dodge Nitro Heat comes with a 3.7 liter V6 engine that produces 210 horsepower. The Nitro Detonator and Shock comes with a more powerful 4.0 liter V6 good for 260 hp. The 2010 Dodge Nitro is a five passenger compact SUV available in Heat, Detonator and Shock trim levels. Marketing calls them “snappy trim levels”. The only real difference I found between the them is their accessories. They all come with a basic package of 20 inch chrome clad wheels, fog lamps, roof rails, tinted windows, keyless entry, full power accessories, heated mirrors, air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, a 60/40-split-folding and reclining rear seat and a six-speaker stereo with a CD player, and more. Other features vary [...]

The Dodge Caliber is another one of those compact crossover vehicles. The Caliber comes only as a compact hatchback/wagon. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split. Under the hood you will find a 2.0 liter 158-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The Rush model comes with a 2.4 liter 172 horsepower inline 4 cylinder. All models come with five speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Dodge Caliber hit the streets in 2006 as a 2007 model. Back then there were quite different engine choices. It started with a 148 horsepower 1.8 liter inline 4 cylinder. Delivering power to the wheels by a five speed manual transmission. Then there was a 2.0 liter engine delivering 158 horsepower engine. The Caliber SRT-4 for 2008 and ’09. boasted of a turbocharged 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine that pumping out 285 horses. Edmunds.com likes the roominess inside the Caliper, but was very disappoint by the overall design. US News and World Reports rate the Dodge Caliber 6.7 out of 10. The aggressive exterior styling, innovative cabin and cargo features were the positives. The underpowered engine along with the cheep interior materials were the detractors for US News’ reviewers. LemonAuto.com lists several recalls for the Dodge Caliber. The recalls were concerning door latches, [...]

If you have not notice there has been some funny looking work van starting to show up in the past few years. They are thinner and smaller than the traditional work utility van the plumber or electrician usually drives around. This uncommon looking van is the Dodge Sprinter. According to Car and Driver, Mercedes-Benz has been building a commercial van since 1995. This different kind of van first showed up in the United States in 2003. The Dodge Sprinter was all about utility, interior room and transporting large numbers of passengers or lots of cargo. Meant for commercial use, as a mini bus or service van, you will not find any fancy stereo system. I must admit driver comfort is taken into consideration. The first-generation Dodge Sprinter was built from 2003 to 2006, under the Freightliner brand, in 2002. At that time the van featured a 2.7 liter turbo diesel five cylinder engine producing 154 horsepower. It came standard with a five speed automatic transmission. The second-generation Dodge Sprinter was sold from 2007 to 2009 with two model styles. Both models offered two wheelbases (144 and 170 inches), two body lengths (233 and 273 inches) and two roof heights (standard and high). The cargo van offers [...]

This week we are going to look at the Dodge Journey. The Journey is a crossover from the classic station wagon and SUV. 2010 is the only the second production year for the Dodge Journey. I would normally wait until a car has been on the street a couple of years before writing an Auto Recon. However, because of the requests I have had about the Journey and the reputation of Dodge’s minivan fleet, I thought I would at least introduce it here. A look through the interior tells you that Chrysler’s minivans had a heavy influence on the Journey. Features like Flip ‘n Stow storage compartment under the front passenger seat, Chill Zone glove box beverage cooler, and bluetooth make the Journey a high end luxury family transportation vehicle. The base SE model comes with large 16-inch steel wheels. It is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is rated at 173 horsepower. You can get a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 235 horsepower. The Journey will cost you between $20,000 to $29,000. This is inline with a vehicle having the engine size and features that is on the Dodge Journey. According to FuelEconomy.com the Journey will get you 15mpg in city and 23 mpg on the open [...]

Cars to the left. Cars to the right of me. There are to many cars to compare. Now is the time to get all these choices to a manageable level. The first and foremost consideration should be how much can I afford to spend, along with how much I can afford for regular maintenance. According the the calculator at Cars.com. If I want to buy a $10,000 car, with a $3,000 for a down payment or trade, I will have 36 payments at $268.26. Provided the interest rate stays a 7.69%. That is $538.30 to be paid out in interest. That is almost 5 months of gas for the car We might be able to stretch our budget to get a new car, but there are consideration that point us to a used car. Lower price, larger variety of selection along with getting a track record of reliability and durability is a big influence. What is nice is that fact there are a lot of used cars that are only a couple of years old, that still look like new. Now I got to start narrowing down from the wide selection to an ideal choice. It is got to be practical, affordable and dashed with a little [...]
