Shopping for the Chevy Equinox

September 1, 2010
By

The Chevy Equinox is classified in what some people want to call “plus-sized crossover, small SUV”. This basically means the Equinox is smaller than a full size SUV and larger than your standard crossover.

The much advertised feature of the Chevy Equinox is the rear seating and rear storage.  60/40-split rear seat that could be slid almost 8 inches front and rear. In the rear cargo section there is a self that increases storage options. This rear shelf can double as a picnic table.

The 60/40 rear is a little different than you traditional bench seat. Picture in your mind a bench seat that’s split right down the middle. You’ll have equal seating on each side of that split. The 60/40 seat doesn’t split the rear seat right in the middle. The split in a spot that is 60%  mark, in the width of the seat. The remaining 40% of the seat left on the other side.

Chevy Equinox was produced from 2005. It was in this first-generation Chevy Equinox models, except the Sport, were equipped with a 3.4 liter V6 engines the produced 185 horsepower. The Sport’s engine was two tenths of a liter larger. The made the engine 3.6 liter with 264 horsepower. They both engines were attached to a five speed automatic transmission.

The 2010 Equinox starts with a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine that produces 182 horsepower The LS models come with a 3.0 liter V6 that produces 264 horsepower. Both engines come with a six speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive is standard. However, you can order an all wheel drive package.

Edmunds.com liked the Equinox is the car like platform that provides superior on road comfort. The Equinox doesn’t have the clumsy driving dynamics and poor fuel economy of other crossover vehicles.

US News and World Reports ranked the Chevy Equinox an easy 8.9 out of 10. They liked the quiet cabin, the versatility sliding rear seats, and exterior design. On the negative side US News did not like the Equinox’s uninspiring driving experience, no third row seating, and sub-par interior materials

Edmunds.com and US News both list the gas mileage between 23 and 45 miles per gallon. When I went to the forums at Townhall-Talk at Edmunds.com and found some interesting comments about gas mileage. Most of those contributor were disappointed with the mountain and highway mileage.

Automotive.com shows 2 recalls. 2005 was concerning the automatic transmission. 2007 was concerning windshield and air bag issues. There has not been any recalls since.

If you want a new Chevy Equinox expect to pay in the $30,000 range. A used 2005 model sells for $9,000 to $12,000.

Bottom-line: If you are going camping, and fishing as a family the Chevy Equinox may be a vehicle for you. Storage space is a plus. Gas mileage is a plus, but don’t expect the high end number.
