Yesterday, before I left the office, I had received an email that informed me that Kyle X was the individual who I was to be their secret Santa. Our gifts were to be under $10. The organizer suggested that a gift from the local 99 cent store would be appropriate. If we really like the person, maybe a regift something that we had received in Christmas past, that we really did not want.
This year I was determined to make more out of Christmas than just, pulling some old gift out of my gift box and wrap it. I hate giving gifts, that when people open them they have this fake smile and say Thank You.
Before heading out to look for that perfect Secret Santa gift, I decided to look at the origin of Secret Santa. I figured by looking into the history, maybe I could better understand my role.
After some reading through the internet I found. that no one is really sure when or where Secret Santa originated. This is true for most all traditions. The present day form, or Secret Santa was an American philanthropist, Larry Dean Stewart (1948 – 2007). He coined the name and spent 20 years doing random acts of kindness for people throughout the year.
Today, most workplaces collect a the names of those who wish to participate. Put them in a hat. Then everyone gets to draw out a name. That is the person who they are to give a gift. This is meant to save the awkwardness of giving gifts to some co-workers and not others.
In my travels, looking for a gift, and other errands, I found Wal Mart, and Winco had displays of gifts under $5 and $10. Making them the perfect Secret Santa gift. When I went to the near by 99 cent store there was nothing I felt comfortable in giving. I did get a gift bag and a few things. Possibly make a larger gift.
I am not going to say what I did get because he may read this post. I do not want Kyle know what I am giving him. I like to surprise people.
