Protecting What I Have

It is a universal principle that if you are a good steward to what you have you will gain more. Those who are bad stewards will lose what they have. You see these people who never seem to have anything nice. They don’t take care of what they have, or they are replace what was stolen from them.

I hang my head low in shame over the amount of stuff I have had stolen or lost over the years. I must admit it was through carelessness on my part. I either did not lock locks or I left valuables in open tempting people to come by and steal from me.

I have since then learned my lesson. What I have in my home and around me is to valuable to keep replacing. We have put together a system to help us keep on top of keeping our processions secure.

At least once a year we review every aspect of what and how things are protected. This is from my online security, to car insurance, to how we lock the house when we leave for a family outing. We spread it out over the whole year. Each three month we focus on a specific aspect of home security. We even have subject matter experts help us get a object look at what we are doing.

Online Security - Between Christmas and New Years is a time update passwords and logins. We test our backup files. You can read the past post title, Time for Password Security, and Backups are Important.

Insurance - February is a good time to review our insurance. Car, life, and homeowners is all reviewed by our insurance agent. In addition we get a second opinion from another independent agent and/or financial adviser.  This year we used Mass Mutual for a second set of eyes. Through their advise we were able to save $20 on car insurance for the same coverage and increase our life insurance coverage.

Physical Security – Physical security refers to when we lock our doors. What people see when they walk by our place. What can be seen by looking in the window. Then there is smoke detectors, fire extinguisher, and evacuation plans.  All these items are review twice a year, just because of their importance.

I know security is an inconvenient chore. It takes work and time, but by spending that little extra time you prevent getting some procession stolen, then having to put out the extra money and time to replace what was lost or stolen.
