At first glance the Motorola Dash looks like the traditional Blackberry phone. It uses the Window Mobile, and sold exclusively by T-mobile.
The Dash has been out since 2006. At that time PCMag.com reviewed the Dash. It was when smart phones where just starting to get popular, and when touch screen phones were rumors. Back then PCMag.com reviewers and users liked the Dash. They rated it 4 to 5 stars out of 5 stars.
When I asked a long time Dash user what she liked about her phone she said, the track ball navigation, the QWERTY keyboard, and the camera were the features that sold her on the Dash. Then I asked about what apps she used. She told me she used her Facebook, and Twitter apps the most. That was in addition to making phone calls and texting.
Regardless of the love affair with the Dash, when you look at the Dash’s spec is not so impressive. The camera is only 2 mega pixels, which is about average for camera phones. The QWERTY keyboard is on all smart phones. The internal memory storage can be expanded to 16 gigabytes.
More recently, Cnet.com did a head to head comparison between the Motorola Dash and the Motorola Q (Verizon’s version of basically the same phone). Cnet.com compared the two phones in 5 different areas; sexiness, navigation, connectivity, multimedia, and call quality. The Dash won in 3 out of 5 categories: sexiness, connectivity, and call quality.
In the past year there has been three notable problems with the phone. They are the Dash powering off at random times, battery life gets excessively short, and randomly deleting messages. These are problems discussed on the T-mobile forums.
If you go to the T-mobile website you will find that the Dash is free with a 2 year contract commitment. That is a lot better than spending $50 to several hundred dollars for a phone.
Bottom – line: If you are not into touch screen smart phone, and don’t want to spend the extra money for a Blackberry, this is one definite phone for you.
I have know people who have had the older 2G model and upgraded to the 3G. They love their phone.
