Gas Mileage Lies
On morning news there was a sniped about a lady who sued Honda for misrepresentation of their gas mileage. It was in small claims court, but still won $10,000. Interesting! It has become pretty much accepted, by all of us, what the sticker gas mileage would be under ideal condition. I am glad someone has stepped up to say, "We are not going to take it anymore!" When I look at different makes...
Touch Screen Desktop Computers
I first saw touch screens computers in the food processing industry back in the late 90's. Since then the technology and the price has been slowly been dropping. As a result we now see more cell phones with touch screens than without. The overall adoption of a touch screen desktop computer has been slow mostly because of the cost. We are seeing the price going under the $1,000 mark. This makes ...
Social Responsible Buying
Last week the name Foxconn and Apple were in all the headlines. It was not about great profits, or some new electronic gadget. It was about the inhumane treatment of the workers in China. What is interesting to note is that Foxconn does not just manufacture electronics for Apple. Foxconn manufacture over 50% of the electronics sold in the United States. Mistreatment of works or labors misbeh...

Search for a Practical Usable Tablet
Since before Thanksgiving I have been slowing giving into the idea of getting a tablet. I have looked at all the major brands of tablets and eReaders. I have been trying to imagine how often I would use it. I watch how other people would use their tablets. While attending a local trade show I noticed a large majority of the vendors were using iPads. There were only a few who had other tablets....
Cruise or Not to Cruise
Here we are at the end of January 2012. Texas is getting heavy rains. Snow and Cold is covering most all of the northern hemisphere. I close my eyes and think of a hot summer day with the sun beating down on may face. Then in an instant, I jump into a nice cool swimming pool. Yes, what better time to plan a summer vacation than when the chilling cold is biting your bones, and the sky is all gloomy...

Shopping for a Paper Shredder

Posted By: The Shopping Nazi on August 12, 2010 in Appliances, Business, Home, Tech Stuff - Comments: 1 Comment »

I remember a time as a teenager we go through the neighbors trash just to see what we could find. This was at the local dump outside a small town, in northern California. People saw us and thought we were looking for old aluminium and copper to sell at our version of the recycling center, in 1968. In addition to the  aluminium and copper we found old love letters, adult magazines, and credit card numbers. Of course we only used what we found for our amusement.

Today, there are unethical people going though other people’s trash, before the garbage man comes to get information for identity theft. This could be a credit card offer, or a bill from a life insurance company, or even an electric bill. You see adding up these bits and pieces of information, along with the internet can yield enough information for identity theft.

It was in Germany 1935 the first machine run paper shredder was developed. Because of the Cold War the paper shredder grew in popularity through out the 1950s. It was in 1959 the first crosscut paper shredder was invented. The crosscut shredder take paper and cuts it into strips, and cuts those strips in multiple directions to create confetti. It was after 1979, when the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun that crosscut paper shredder grew in popularity. Just from 1990 to the year 2000 sales grew by over 7,500,000 units.

Today, you can find two basic types of paper shredder’s; straight and crosscut. The just turn documents into long strips of paper. This does not take much skill to glue back to a readable state. The crosscut shredder, in addition to cutting a document into long strips cuts cross ways at various angles, thus making it even more difficult to reassembly it.

Now when it comes to buying a paper shredder you can get them from under $50 to over $1,000, depending on the volume of  material you want shredded. There are shredders that will shred more than paper, like plastic credit cards and even the thicker CD/DVD’s.

If you are serious about increasing the difficulty of anyone recovering documents you throw in the trash, I would recommend you go first to Paper Shredder Reviews. This way you know what to expect to find before you head to into you local Wal Mart or office supply store.
