iPad Recon

Apples newest addition to its’ stable of electronic devices, the iPad has been in consumer hands for just under a week. Now to continue with our theme of Recon Week, let us take a look at what Apple is saying about the iPad. Then we will look at people are saying about their experience with the iPad.

To start let us go the Apple’s website and look at what Apple is saying about their their latest tech toy.

The first glance of the webpage for the iPad reveals there are 6 different variations. You have the option of three different sizes of hard in your iPad; 16, 32, and 64 gigabyte. Then you can choose whether to have just WiFi or WiFi+3G in connection options to the internet.

You basic iPad starts at $499. Then you add WiFi+3G you add another $130. Each size larger in hard drive adds $100 to the price. Of course Apple does give you free shipping.

I was delight to read that the iPad will connect to a PC as well as a Mac, through iTunes. The 3G data hook up is through ATT&T. No surprise there. The 250 Mega Byte per month is $14.99, while the unlimited data plan is $29.99.

The outstanding problem people are having with the iPad can be document by the BBC report that hundreds are complaining about weak signals on the tablet computer. Once an iPad has disconnected from a WiFi connection it has trouble reconnecting to that connection.

I was able to tap into Apple’s discussion forum for the iPad. Just reading all the different issues people are having, is quite scary.

Bottom-line: Like any new product on the market there is problems. The question is do you want to get the iPad to WOW your friends or do you want the iPad for its’ functionality.

I do like the fact that the iPad can be sync to my PC through iTunes. At first I was afraid that it would have to be a stand-a-lone device, since I am a PC.

Personally, I am tired of doing R&D for tech manufactures.  I will wait a couple of years before getting an iPad. The price will come down by then. Maybe I will be able to pick up one used.
