As much as everyone of us does not like to think about death, it will happen. We are going to leave behind family members, friends, and stuff. What we want our family to do with that stuff after we are gone is a very important issue.
I am not big on stuff. I realize that I am only going to be on this planet for a very short time. So I am not into collecting a lot of stuff. What concerns me when I am gone is my family and how they will live when I am gone.
Then there are those who have money, property, and other valued items. These can range in value from a few thousand to several million dollars. Wars have been know to break out over the dispersal of this stuff, when an individual dies.
To help make sure the dying individuals wishes are honored, a will is usually drawn up. This is a piece of paper that says who gets what after the person is dead. In the state of Idaho, it can be written on something as simple as a napkin. In other places a legal binding will has to be a long drawn out document done by a lawyer, notarized, and then filed with the local court.
The later process can cost from a couple hundred dollars and up. Where as the former could be lost and challenged in a long court fight. So I recommend the method of writing a will be in proportional to the value of stuff and possible conflict of remaining family, over it.
May I suggest a couple of alternatives. Each of these you can do from your home. Then take it to a notary of public, and lock it away where other family members can find it.
The first place I suggest is Legal Zoom. One of its founders is the famous lawyer Robert Shapiro. At Legal Zoom a will can cost you from $69 to $119. Then depends on its’ complexity, as well as how many times you need to revise it.
The second place I suggest is Quicken Will Maker Plus 2010. It will run you about $35. You can even get it cheaper if you buy it in a bundle with Quicken accounting software.
As much as we do not like thinking about leaving this life. A well written will stating our wishes as to what we want done with our body and stuff will be a great help to those whom we leave behind. It will help ease the stress in a time of high emotional stress.
