I was headed out the door to run some errands when my wife as me to stop by the store and get Velveeta cheese for dinner. Considering the route I was taking for my errands, I figured it would be simpler to stop by Albertsons instead of Winco.
Since I was in such a hurry, I raced in the store grabbed 2 pound box of cheese, then headed to the self check out lane. I don’t think I spent more than 3 minutes in the store from the time I walked in the door until I walked out with cheese in hand.
When I got home a looked at the receipt. I was shocked. I had just spent $6.99 for 2 pounds of American process cheese. I normally don’t spend over $5 for the same 2 pounds of Velveeta cheese. Sometimes I even find it under $4.25.
I could of have taken a few extra minutes and drove another half mile and saved at least $2.
Yesterday, my daughter was sneezing from allergies. We did not have medication in the house to help her. I went down to the local Wallgreen’s. There standing in front of all choices for children’s allergiy medicine, the latest recalls came to mind.
The name brand liquid 4 ounce bottle of medicine was $2.50 more than the generic equivalent. Then I remembered what the lady on the news said. She said the generic brands of children medicine was safer than the Tylenol and Benadryl brands.
Because of our work schedules my wife and I make a point that I take her lunch at least once a week. This week I stopped by the local New York style deli. There 2 large pastrami sandwiches along with soda and chips was just over $20.
I could of have made those sandwiches at home for less than half. But I wanted to show her that I valued her enough to spend a little extra money on her by having a professional fix her a correct New York pastrami sandwich. A little more effort than just taking her lunch.
I have said all this some people choose to save money in some area to spend it in others. The bottom-line is when it is all said and done. No matter how you cut the cheese. You only have so much cheese at the start of the day.
