Since Apple released the iPad, there has been renewed interest in reading non-paper books; aka eBooks. What is interesting to note is great number of ways you can read an eBook.
Wikipedia list 18+ formats for eBooks. There is almost just as many different types of hardware that is designed to be used as eBooks readers. Most all of them have met with marginal success from the general public in the terms of sale and popularity.
The Amazon Kindle 2 being the most popular of the eBook reader. They recently lowered their price of its’ basic 6″ model to $189, to pull in sales from Apple’s eReader/tablet computer the iPad.
The most popular of the eBook reader formats are Plain Text (.txt), Hypertext Markup Language (.html), Portable Document Format (. pdf), and Amazon Kindle (.azw). Every eReader that I looked at supports more than one format of ebook. Most all will allow you to read eBooks or text document in a Plain Text (.txt), Hypertext Markup Language (.html), and Portable Document Format (. pdf). Personal desktop and laptop computer will allow you to read eBooks in all of the above formats except the Amazon Kindle (.azw).
What I found surprising is that most eBooks will play audio books and/or music by supporting the MP3 auto format. Many use WiFi or 3G data to connect to an eBook store. All have a means to connect via USB to your computer.
There is nothing like a side by side comparisons of the different eBook readers. That is why I like eBookReaderMatrix.com which compares the four most popular of the eBook readers: Amazon Kindle 2, Amazon Kindle DX, Sony PRS-700, and the Barnes & Noble Nook. Then there is ConsumerReports.org where the Kindle and iPad are compared.
Bottom-line: It is clear that the Amazon Kindle 2 and Apple’s iPad are the two leader when it comes to eBook readers. The three main questions you need to be asking yourself is:
1. Will you be using your eBook reader outside or indoors?
2. What is the format of the eBooks you will be reading?
3. Can you save money by getting the iPad over the Amazon Kindle 2?
Personally, I am waiting until the iPad has been out for more than a year. There are bugs to be worked out. Plus the price will start to come down by that time.
Update: My sources in the tech world are telling me since the release if the iPad and lowering of prices with various eBook reader. If you can wait on purchasing one. Do so. There are some great new products with lower prices coming our way.
