It always amazes me how easy myths, misconceptions and just out right false hoods get started. All it starts from some parent, or authority figure make what sounds like a reasonable statement. Then with good intentions that false statement is accepted without any critical research, by other people. If the untruth concerns a any product or service will lead to loss of precious hard earned money. It does not take any college degree to do some critical thinking, and discern what is true. Just by taking lessons learn from science class about the scientific method along with good old fashion math is the place to start. All the tools needed is a calculator, some paper, and a pencil. You can confirm what I have listed below by a little observation and reducing costs to the lowest common denominator. 1. “Cheaper by Bulk” I will admit some things are cheaper in larger quantities, but not everything. Consumer Reports project editor Tod Marks agrees smaller sizes may actually be cheaper. It can be as high as 25% of the products on grocery store shelves. That is why it is best take a calculator with you shopping. By simply figuring the cost to things like the [...]

This is the time of the year where companies renew their employee health benefits. According to the LA Times McDonald’s may dropped their employee health benefit. Over the past year there has been a lot of written and discussed on the news about the coverage of our health insurance. These discussion have made a lot of people nervous. Most of them are afraid that their will be stuck with now health insurance. Some are fearful that they will be laying under a bridge dying, with no way to get medical help. I have set down a did some research about what we can expect in 2011 for health care. The first place that I went was HealthReform.gov. On the website is a listing of 14 provisions that took place immediately. If your employer is changing your coverage. If you are self-employed and are looking for health insurance for 2011. You will need to read the following paragraphs. I have put to some basics that you need to be aware. Preventive Care: Most all old and new insurance plans provide free or reduced cost preventive care. From what I am reading this will be free and included in your basic coverage.
As much as everyone of us does not like to think about death, it will happen. We are going to leave behind family members, friends, and stuff. What we want our family to do with that stuff after we are gone is a very important issue. I am not big on stuff. I realize that I am only going to be on this planet for a very short time. So I am not into collecting a lot of stuff. What concerns me when I am gone is my family and how they will live when I am gone. Then there are those who have money, property, and other valued items. These can range in value from a few thousand to several million dollars. Wars have been know to break out over the dispersal of this stuff, when an individual dies. To help make sure the dying individuals wishes are honored, a will is usually drawn up. This is a piece of paper that says who gets what after the person is dead. In the state of Idaho, it can be written on something as simple as a napkin. In other places a legal binding will has to be a long [...]

Yesterday, when I was at the gym. It was there while I was warming up on the treadmill. At the same time I was flipping through the channels on the little television, in front of me. Just about every channel had some commercial, infomercial, or discussion about living a better life through better physical or mental health. Last Sunday, at church, our pastor proudly announced, during his sermon that he had lost 25 pounds last year. His goal for 2010 was to get in even better physical health. At the start of 2010, I renew my fitness and healthy goals. I am proud to announce I had met mine for 2009. For 2010 they are the same with a modest improvement. What I find through the discussion about health and fitness, there is no cost per pound lost. Neither do I hear any numbers for percentage of failure from a diet and/or exercise program. I believe that get fit and healthy quick schemes are like get rich quick schemes. They do not exist. Just by what I wrote in the last paragraph eliminates just about all of the fitness advertisement on television. Then you have the health drinks, juicers, and blenders, where all you need is some [...]

The lead article on that page was, “More Local Programs to help you get healthy in 2010″. As I walked away it got me thinking that about all the advertisements I have seeing around getting healthy. I know that every January millions of people flock to gyms, Weight Watchers and countless other get healthy resources. Then by March it is something that is being paid for, but not used. About a week ago, a friend came up to me, with a big smile on her face. She proceeded to tell me that she had just came from the gym. She was feeling great. This was her first visit to the gym since she got the membership several months ago. Did I mention that she live four block from the gym! That particular gym’s membership starts at $24.95 per month. So if she had not gone to the gym for say, three months. She had thrown away $74.85. I have a deluxe membership. It allows me visit any Gold’s Gym without paying extra. I pay $45.24 per month. I got the [...]
