We have just come out of an really mild winter. Some of the projections for summer suggest this summer is going to be a real hot one. That means our utility bills will be headed upward from air conditioning. A lot of it is attributed to global warming. It was our daughter who just this last week reminded me that today is Earth Day. Earth Day is all about each one of us being responsible citizens of planet earth. We should do everything possible to protect our environment. The most impacting place we can start is our kitchen. It is the kitchen where the most energy is used and has the most waste is produced. A few weeks ago, I received an email from The Saving Lady from MySavingPlace.com. In her email she outlined ten things we could do to make our kitchens greener. She felt these ten things were so important enough to share them. After reading through them and talking to my wife and daughter, we decided they were important enough to pass them on to you. So below is the ten things we all can do to make our kitchens greener, on the Earth Day 2012. 1. Use Healthy Eco-Friendly Cleaners Many [...]

It is raining outside. It has been raining off and on for over a week. Soon the rain will go away. It will then be replaced with the heat of summer. Emergency rooms will start to see people suffering from various symptoms of dehydration. Big money can be save from going to the emergency room by simply drinking water. The Mayo Clinic says men should be drinking roughly 3 liters or about 13 cups of beverages a day. For women it is 2.2 liters or about 9 cups of total beverages a day. Many doctors and health care professional say eight 8 ounces cups of water per day is minimum. That is 1.9 liters of water per day. Most health care professionals say we should be drinking water, not counting soda, juice or milk. I realize there are parts of this planet where the water tastes very, very, bad. In fact you can even get sick drinking the water. That is why certain travel agents once recommend that you drink beer instead of water. In later years they started recommending bottled water. I was in Wal Mart the other day. As I was walking down the wide aisle that separates the grocery section from the clothing section, [...]

If you remember way back in elementary school when you took math, there was the term Lowest Common Denominator. It referred to the lower common number you could convert two fractions. Many times when I talk about price comparisons, I will convert products into ounces. I will say generic strawberry jam at Wal Mart is 7.75 cents per ounce. Then at WINCO their strawberry jam is 7.6 per ounce. Once jar is 32 ounce, and the other store’s jar is 46 ounce. This is very common practice. For the consumer it can be very deceptive. By human nature we look at the price, and don’t really pay that close attention to the container size. Whenever I go shopping, I convert cost of especially food items to the least common denominator. Otherwise I would be comparing apples to oranges. In the past year, there has been several stories in the news how different manufactures have made the size of their package smaller, while appearing to only changing their label. This has been done for years. Thanks to the internet and more consumer watch groups, manufactures are not getting away with this slight of hand. My blood really started to boil when I notice [...]

Every time my wife and I would go shopping we would be buying at least 1 box of freezer bags. Then there was the sandwich bags for lunches. In my mind this was a waste of money and harm to our green earth. One gallon freezer bag is 9 cents. A plastic reusable 8 cup reusable food container 68 cents each. That means if I reuse the 8 cup container 8 times I make for a greener earth and save 4 cents per container. Note: There is 16 US cups to 1 US gallon. I have never been able to comfortably put a full gallon of product in a plastic bag.
