The VW Bug or the Volkswagen Beetle has long been a symbol of German engineering. In the United States it a was one of the first gas saving commuter cars.
Did you know that the Beetle got its’ start back in the 1938! The revolutionary design of air cooled rear engine design was a head turner. Then you add fuel economy along enough pep to drive the fast speed of the German Autobahn made it a instant success.
It was not until the 1950′s that the Volkswagen started showing up on US roads. Walt Disney added to the Beetle’s popularity with the Movie Herbie. Until recently it the little car that could faded into background. So much for the history. If you want to read more Edmund’s has a great summary on the history of the Volkswagen Beetle.
Now for those of us who want good transportation, and are not into collecting a piece of American history, let us look at the modern day Beetle.
Edmunds.com review of the new Beetle is not very flattering. They say it hasn’t changed much. It’s still a good car. It will get you from point A to point B and save you money. As far back as I can remember the VW Bug was not built for comfort. You got the car for fuel economy.
The Beetles of the 21st century are front-wheel-drive. They are available as a two-door hatchback or a two-door convertible’s. The engine is a powerful 2.5-liter five-cylinder producing 170 horsepower. Your have the choice of two transmissions. A standard five-speed manual for those who enjoy the experience of shifting and an optional six-speed automatic who don’t like to shift.
You can spend over $25,000 for a new Volkswagen Beetle. Then you can pick up a used 2005 model for around $8,000.
After reviewing the recalls in the last 5 years from Automotive.com, I have wondered what has happen to good old German engineering? Major hydraulic brake and structural issues are among the top recall problems.
FuelEconomy.com rates the Beetle at 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. This is why many people bought the little car. Great gas mileage!
Bottom-line: If I had a long commute to and from work. If I just wanted to get there without wanting a whole lot of comfort, I would choose the Volkswagen Beetle.
