Gas Mileage Lies
On morning news there was a sniped about a lady who sued Honda for misrepresentation of their gas mileage. It was in small claims court, but still won $10,000. Interesting! It has become pretty much accepted, by all of us, what the sticker gas mileage would be under ideal condition. I am glad someone has stepped up to say, "We are not going to take it anymore!" When I look at different makes...
Touch Screen Desktop Computers
I first saw touch screens computers in the food processing industry back in the late 90's. Since then the technology and the price has been slowly been dropping. As a result we now see more cell phones with touch screens than without. The overall adoption of a touch screen desktop computer has been slow mostly because of the cost. We are seeing the price going under the $1,000 mark. This makes ...
Social Responsible Buying
Last week the name Foxconn and Apple were in all the headlines. It was not about great profits, or some new electronic gadget. It was about the inhumane treatment of the workers in China. What is interesting to note is that Foxconn does not just manufacture electronics for Apple. Foxconn manufacture over 50% of the electronics sold in the United States. Mistreatment of works or labors misbeh...

Search for a Practical Usable Tablet
Since before Thanksgiving I have been slowing giving into the idea of getting a tablet. I have looked at all the major brands of tablets and eReaders. I have been trying to imagine how often I would use it. I watch how other people would use their tablets. While attending a local trade show I noticed a large majority of the vendors were using iPads. There were only a few who had other tablets....
Cruise or Not to Cruise
Here we are at the end of January 2012. Texas is getting heavy rains. Snow and Cold is covering most all of the northern hemisphere. I close my eyes and think of a hot summer day with the sun beating down on may face. Then in an instant, I jump into a nice cool swimming pool. Yes, what better time to plan a summer vacation than when the chilling cold is biting your bones, and the sky is all gloomy...

Shopping for a Volvo V70

Posted By: The Shopping Nazi on July 21, 2010 in Automotive - Comments: 2 Comments »

The Volvo car company is a Swedish car company that can be dated back to 1920. I remember back in the 70′s Volvo was considered it a reliable luxury car that you had to take to the local Volvo dealer if anything went wrong.

Over the years Volvo has been seen on the road. I have noticed it but not paid much attention to them. Today, I want to take a look at the Volvo V70. The V70 is in a long line of safe and practical midsize wagons from the Swedish company

The  Volvo V70 is one of the few station wagons that are still on the road. The model V70 is no more than a refreshed version of the 850 wagon, which debuted in 1993 as the first front-wheel-drive Volvo to be offered stateside.

Base models of the Volvo V70 are powered by a 2.4 liter engine. The 2.4T models gets 197 horsepower with a turbocharger. The T5 model is more powerful  producing 247 horsepower.

US News and World Reports likes the advanced safety systems, simple standard features, and the large cargo space. However, they are disappointed with the underpowered engine and bad fuel economy.

Motor Trend show the V70 FWD model with a gas mileage of 20 to 28 miles per gallon of gas.

According to Automotive.com there has been recalls of one sort or the other for the last 1998. These recalls range from cooling system and brakes.

You can get a new Volvo V70 out the door for as little as $32,000. A five year old 2005 will be $12,000 to $15,000.

Bottom-line: The overall sense I get from reading a lot of reviews and forum is that the Volvo V70 has reliability issues. There has been a couple of places like US News and World Reports would quote another source, but I could not find any hard evidence from that other source. In light of these rumbling and the number of recalls for the V70, I would pass unless you just have to have a Volvo.
