Shopping for a Toyota Yaris

August 11, 2010
By

When you see the Toyota Yaris driving down the road you cannot help but thing fuel economy, frugal and cute little car. Regardless of all the bad publicity that Toyota has been getting this year, I was attracted at taking a closer look at this  little car.

The Yaris first went on sale in North America in 2000 under the name of Echo. It was available only as sedan with 2 or 4 doors. The Toyota Yaris Sedan , in 2007, was introduced.

Under the hood the Yaris comes with one basic engine a 1.5 liter, inline 4 cylinder that produces 106-horsepower. The front-wheel-drive 2010 Toyota Yaris comes with a five speed manual transmission as standard. You can get a four speed automatic option.  Tests have showed the Yaris with an automatic transmission took a leisurely 10.7 seconds to reach 60 mph.

The Yaris has never really gained large appeal by the general public. Many reviewers feel that money can be well spent on other economy cars.

US News & World Reports likes the Yaris’ the safety features, roomy front seats, and excellent gas mileage for the class, However, they did not like the Toyota Yaris’ awkward driving position, noticeable engine noise, and placement for the instrument panel in the center of the dashboard.

According to LemonAuto.com there has been a recall around the seat belt retracting before air bags deploy, thus causing a fire with a front end collision. The good thing is that Toyota has not tried to cover up/mimize the issue like with the Prius.

FuelEconomy.gov rate the 2010 Toyota Yaris in the 29 to 35 miles per gallon range. Then you add the low price tag of $12,000 to $14,000 starts to make the Toyota Yaris a means to save money.

Bottom-line: Looking around at other cars that are in the sub compact class like the Honda Fit, which costs about $2,000 more than the Yaris.  Then the Ford Fiesta, which costs a few hundred dollars more than the Yaris, but gets much better gas mileage. I start to think that there could be better choices of a economic sub compact for my commute.

I think I am investigate the Ford Fiesta and the Honda Fit in more detail.
