March seems to be truck month. Driving by local dealership, I see Ford and Chevy, both really pushing the sale of their truck. Since I did Auto Recon on the Ford, Dodge, and Chevy trucks. I thought it only fitting to recon on the Toyota Tacoma.
At first I wanted to stay away from Toyota because of the recent scandal around the recalls. After doing my recon, I am glad I did today’s recon.
The Toyota Tundra is the lighter version of the Toyota Tundra. The Tacoma replaced the not so popular T100 pickup in 1996. In recent years, The Tacoma has become known as a recreational pickup. It has never really caught on with the contractors and farmers.
The Tacoma is powered by 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engine rated at 159 horsepower. You can get 4.0 liter V6 that puts out 236 horsepower. This makes for a nice EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city, and 25 mpg on the open road.
the second generation Tu, which debuted for the 2008 model year. 2008 and ’09 trucks had a less powerful base engine, a 4.7-liter, 271-hp V8 with a five-speed automatic transmission.
I have 2010 Tacoma in the $20,000 to $24,000 range. Where older 2005 Tacoma Prerunner selling as low as $13,000.
According to Automotive.com, there are recalls from 2009 and 2010. What is interesting, the Toyota Tacoma has the similar recalls for speed control and acceleration pedal.
I find this quite interesting since Toyota has been in the news for its other vehicles with acceleration problems.
Bottom-line: I would not get a Toyota of any newer model at this time. Considering the recalls, and apparent cover-up. From my research, Toyota has know about the problem of acceleration in more than the Camry and Prius for sometime. It looks like the same problem is also in their truck line.
If you are really wanting a Toyota Tacoma, wait. Let us see where Toyota is standing this time next year. Are there going to be more problems? Could it be we have seen the worst of it?
