Back in the mid 1990′s a neighbor was in his driveway with the hood up on his Subaru Outback. I walked over to see what had got his attention. He stated his station wagon would not start. I saw how packed everything was in the engine compartment. Then I said, ‘Good Luck”, and walked over to my car and drove off.
Subaru is not exactly the biggest of all the automakers in the United States. The Subaru Outback has been around since the mid-1990s. The Outback has not been the most popular vehicles, but it has always had a solid reputation.

Edmunds.com is reporting the redesigned for 2010, will provide a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine producing a 170 horsepower. You can get the Outback with a 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 256 hp.
2005 to 2009 model have 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine delivering a good 170 hp. The more elite models upgraded to a 2.5 liter with a turbocharger engine delivers a 243 hp. The 3.0 liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder pushes the same 245 hp.
You can pick up a new Subaru Outback starting at just under $30,000. A 2005 model, in good condition will cost $13,000.
TrueDelta.com reports the Subaru Outback gas mileage to average between 18 mpg to 28 mpg. Cars.com agrees with these numbers. TrueDelta.com goes the extra mile in its’ mileage rating. They provide detail conditions where the miles per gallon rating was produced.
Automotive.com shows only six recalls in the past 10 years. The latest one was back for the 2005 model. This is where the drivers and passenger side air bags were not fully deploying.
Bottom-line: The Subaru Outback does deserve a second, and third look. Like most all motor vehicles, today, get a good mechanic who knows about your vehicles. You will not do much more than change tires on your own.
