We all have seen these funny little cars running around town. They look like they you could fold up two normal size people inside with no room to spare.
Smart had there beginning back in 1993. They were a joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swiss watchmaker Swatch. They created a company known as Daimler AG to manufacture a line of of microcars. They were to be produced Hambach, France.
The Smart car was built with the quality with the expertise of Mercedes-Benz, while Swatch would contribute its funky design philosophy. The resulting two-passenger coupe for city drivers.
This funky little car hit the streets in 1998. Initial sales began in nine continental European countries. The Smart car proved popular among consumers.
A little car with a 23.6 inch wheel base made it ideal for the city commuter. Small car, with a 996 cc engine coupled to a 5 speed transmission turning 155/60R15 tires puts to the ground 70 horsepower delivering 41 miles per gallon. Edmunds.com did not like the transmission, nor the price tag. They thought a person could do better with a larger subcompact. Edmund’s called the floor-mounted brake pedal awkward.
A new 2010 Smart Fortwo will anywhere from $12,000 to $21,000. Why Such range in price for such a little car. Well, you have a lot of add-on options. Some of them I would consider standard like a radio. That is an extra $350.
The only recall I found was at AutoLemon.com. That was for a bad batch of paint. There was some comments on the forums about a battery issue.
Bottom-line: If you got a commute that requires you to get on the freeway. Don’t get this car. If you are over 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. Don’t get this car. If like to haul stuff in your car. Don’t get this car. If you like a luxury ride. Don’t get this car.
If you buzz around in the city. Your daily commute is in city traffic. Then this is the car for you.
