The Chrysler PT Cruiser is one of few cars when I first saw it on the street, I said to myself, I want it. I got to admit that its 1930′s retro look is cool.
It was inspired by the panel vans of the 1930′s. Released in 2001, not many cars can look cool combining the new and design of years past.
A 150-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard. On limited edition you can get a 180-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. You do have the choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. Any combination will make the Cruiser nice for cruising, not for any street racing.
The Cruiser is rated at 19 to 24 miles per gallon. FuelEconomy.gov rates the PT Cruiser as one of the best in its’ class for gas mileage.
The PT Cruiser fits in the middle between a sedan and a mini suv. It is roomy with its’ own style. Price puts it quite affordable for such a cool looking vehicle. will find the PT an affordable choice that stands out in a crowd.
A new Chrysler PT Cruiser starts around $18,000. While a 2005 models sells for just under $6,000 to over $10,000. The wide range in used model resellability is based on features or customization. There has been a whole industry that has grown out of customizing the PT Cruiser.
I was sad to see that there is a whole website devoted to the problems of the PT Cruiser. After reading through the website, it was mostly about how much oil should a car really use. Personally, I think a quart of oil every 1,000 miles is a bit much.
Automotive.com reports that there has been only six recalls since 2001. None in the last three years. They range from the suspension issues to the rear window visibility.
Bottom-line: The PT Cruiser is a cool looking car. It turns heads, but the Cruiser can be hard to see out. Face it, it is a show car. I would drive it as a get around vehicle to impress people.
