I think everyone of us have see the cute little television commercial where the brown and white mice are commuting to work on these little exercise wheels. Then comes along two other mice riding in a KIA Soul while rock-in to music streaming from an iPod.
My first thought has been that car is too small for my 6 foot 200 pound frame. But after seeing that commercial over a hundred times, I figured it was time to take a closer look at this little car.
A fairly new arrival from the Korean car company KIA, this compact has been gunning for mainstream economy-car market from the very beginning. There angle is shoppers who want something different.
The KIA Soul was at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The we were teased at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. The people in marketing just kept playing with the name Soul; Soul Burner, Soul Searcher, and Soul Diva.
Under the hood you can get a 1.6 liter engine producing a modest 122 horsepower with a five-speed manual transmission. If you are carrying heavier bodies then you can get a 2.0 liter four with 142 hp with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Either one has nice acceleration for entering freeway speeds.
Edmunds.com liked all the available features, highly customizable, user-friendly controls, ample passenger space, along with it being fun to drive. They did not like the noise and not so smooth highway ride, in addition to the silly trim level names.
According to the KIA Soul Forums there could be an up and coming recall on its’ idler pully. Otherwise the KIA Soul appears to be electrically and mechanically sound little car.
Real world gas mileage numbers show the Soul ranges from 24 to 38 miles per gallon. Averaging around 30 miles per gallon. For a small commuter car that you can drive off the lot for between $13,000 to $18,000.
Bottom-line: This is one commuter car I would definitely take a second look at. The KIA Soul has only been on the streets in the US for a couple of years. Considering gas prices time could prove this little car has some real soul.
