The Honda Fit is another one of those little sub compact cars that came into being to easy the strain on our wallets because of high gas prices. The Fit is akin to the sportier Honda Jazz. Introduced at the time of high gas prices the Honda Fit is a subcompact four door hatchback.
The first-generation Honda Fit was available for just two years: 2007 and 2008 model year. The base model came with air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack are standard. The Sport model added larger wheels, sportier exterior trim details, cruise control and a six-speaker audio system with an iPod-friendly USB port. In addition Fit Sports can with an optional touchscreen navigation system and stability control.
Both models Fit and Fit Sport come with a fuel-efficient 1.5 liter four cylinder engine that delivers 117 horsepower. Each model can be purchased with a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission.
Edmunds.com raved because it liked the Honda Fit’s cornering and acceleration. The Fit could achieve 0 to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds. It called the car as a whole almost perfect.
US News and World Reports likes the spacious rear seats, numerous storage options, and excellent fuel economy for the class. However, it does not like cramped front seat for taller drivers, unhelpful sun visors, and no stability control or anti-skid option for the base trim.
US Recall News warned the 2007 – 2008 Honda Fit was prone to overheating and catching fire. Scary at best. I have seen reports from other sources of problems with oil leaks and other issues.
FuelEconomy.gov reports gas mileage from 27 to 35 miles per gallon.
Honda Fit is price for out the door at $15,000. The 2007 model goes for just over $10,000.
Bottom-line: I do like the mileage. I don’t like the the driver is cramp if he is over 6′ (like me). Considering the Honda Fit is only a couple of years old, I will wait. I want to see its’ track record before I think about buying it.
