The Dodge Charger is one of those original muscle cars from the 60′s, whose children are still on the road today. Dodge Charger first hit the streets in the mid 60′s and was popularized by NASCAR along with movies. It quickly became an icon of the muscle car era.
Under the hood is the standard 178 horsepower with a 2.7 liter V6. If you want to upgrade in the SE and standard on the SXT is a little more powerful 250 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 engine. For those you want to feel the true muscle car there is the Charger R/T. I has under its hood a V8 HEMI producing 368 horsepower. If you want more then there is available Daytona R/T package adding more performance hardware and a few cosmetic extras. All Charges come with a five speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels.
There is more. A SRT8 which is a product of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology. It’s the fastest of all the Charger’s and comes with an awesome 6.1 liter V8 HEMI that produces 425 horsepower.
Automotive.com list 9 recalls over the 40 plus years history of the Dodge Charger. Considering it is the car that has a reputation of pushing the edge of performance and speed, I am personally surprised there were not more recalls.
A new Dodge Charger will set you back just over $25,000. Now depending in its condition and what is under the hood a 2005 model will go for as little as $12,000. Of course I have found a 1966 Dodge Charger for $15,500.
Don’t expect to get great fuel economy from any of the Dodge Chargers. FuelEconomy.gov says to expect 13 to 18 mile per gallon is about all you can expect from any Dodge Charger. Like I said they are built for speed not economy.
Bottom-line: The Dodge Charger is a icon of the muscle car era. I am surprised they are still being made considering the trend is toward fuel efficient Eco friendly cars. This would be a good second car for the guy who periodically feels the need for speed. After all what red blooded american does not fall under the magic of a powerful herd of horses under the control of their right foot.
