I was asked to do an auto recon on the Acura TL while at a local social networking event, by one of the attendees. He was looking at buying one, but wanted to know more. I chose the TL model line because it close to mid range of all the Acura models.
The Acura brand has been around since 1986. Acura is a division of the Honda motor company, that is sold mostly in the US, Canada, and Hong Kong. Marketed to those who want luxury and performance in the car they drive.
The Acura TL model is the competitor to other entry level luxury sedans like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti G37 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Over the years it has slowly grown in reputation as a solid performer in this class.
The TL model comes with front wheel drive powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine producing a 280 horsepower. The all wheel-drive TL SH-AWD comes with a 3.7 liter V6 engine delivering 305 horsepower. These two engines are the Acura 24 valve with Acura’s VTEC® (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control®) system.
The newest feature to the Acura is SH-AWD (which stands for super-handling all-wheel drive) version that comes with a 305-horsepower engine. There is a six speed manual transmission version to catch the attention of performance enthusiasts. Back in 2009 model year, the SH-AWD was only offered with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Edmunds.com liked Many user-friendly high-tech features, spacious cabin, smart all-wheel-drive system, superb available surround-sound stereo, excellent crash test scores. However, they called the steering numb. (Whatever that means)
Automotive.com reports several recalls on the Acura TL line. The biggest being in 2008 for steering hydraulic line and the hose connections. Some of the forums talk about issues with the transmission in models older than 2000. When I went to AutoSurvey.org there was some interesting mix of comments by people who bought the Acura TL.
FuelEconomy.gov shows the Acura TL to range from 16 to 26 miles per gallon. The lower gas mileage is for the all wheel drive models.
A new Acura TL will cost you between $35,000 – $43,000.
Bottom-line: I got to admit the Acura TL is a nice luxury car. Honda has done a good job in putting together a car that would be happy to own. The price is within the range I would expect to pay for a entry level luxury car. I would of have like to seen the gas mileage in the 25 to 30 miles per gallon range.
